This historic paper map entitled ‘The East Indies including more particularly the British Dominions on the Continent of India’, by John Blair ; T. Kitchin, senr. sculpsit., was published by in 1773. It covers India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and portions of Maldives, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Burma, and Indonesia.

The map shows features such as drainage, cities and other human settlements, territorial and administrative boundaries, shoreline features, and more. Relief is shown pictorially.

Blair, John, L.L.D was an eminent Scottish chronologist. He received a clerical education at Edinburgh, after which he looked for employment in London. He is best known for his publication, “The Chronology and History of the World, from the Creation of the year of Christ, 1753.” This work is masterfully illustrated in 56 tables, four of which are introductory and contain the centuries prior to the first Olympiad. Each of the remaining 52 contain in one expanded view, half a century. He was published by subscription. In Jan, 1775, he was elected FRS, and in 1761, FAS. He served the Royal family in various capacities, including as the chaplain to the Dowager Princess of Wales, and mathematical tutor to the Duke of York. He passed away in 1782, suffering from influenza and the shock after the death of his brother.
