Pattachitra: Krishna Leela

c. 21st century

This is a pattachitra executed in monochrome. The subjects are still stories from the life of Krishna, and the central panel depicts the image of Krishna and Radha in embrace. As the pattas were traditionally used as personal home shrines, the central icons were always larger and primary – being supported by stories and images around them which were by rule smaller in size to symbolise hierarchy. The outer panels in this patta agin are filled by life stories of Krishna and illustrate his various miracles such as the defeat of the snake Kaliya, the lifting of Govardhan mountain, the defeat of other demons like Bakasura and Hayagriva as well as demonesses like Putana.
