B Prabha was a feminist artist at a time when there wasn’t much support for women’s voices. Born in 1933 to a middle-class family in Nagpur, she graduated from the JJ School of Art in Mumbai and spent a few years exploring different mediums before finding the perfect fit for her elegant style with oil on canvas. Women occupied the spotlight in many of her paintings, just going about their lives, working unpaid, invisible jobs. While this painting doesn’t feature her main muse, it’s still a great representation of her formal, graceful aesthetic. Adding to its historical value is the fact that the work was once owned by Homi Bhabha and acquired in an auction of his estate.
