The Cross

In this painting, the artist depicts Jesus crucified in a traditional folkish set-up. Two goats look up at the cross, while architectural elements of what look like churches already seem to emerge in the backdrop.

Madhvi Parekh got much of her exposure to art from her husband Manu Parekh who studied at the J.J. School of Art.Born in a village in Gujarat, Madhvi Parekh’s art reflects her rural influences in the stylised folk-art style that she employs. Through her works, Madhavi depicted memories of her childhood, popular bedtime stories and legends of her village. Very often she uses the kalamkari and pichwai compositional settings where the main character is placed at the center and minor characters fill in the rest of the space.
