Jahangir, Leo Zodiac Silver Rupee of Ahmedabad Mint

1027 (Hijri year) / AD 1618/ RY 13

This coin is a Silver Zodiac Rupee, minted by Jahangir (r. 1605-1627). Jahangir, a great patron of the arts, took a keen interest in coinage during his reign. The Zodiac coins were the most controversial yet unique ones among his innovative coinage.

The ''Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri'' mentions that Jahangir ordered to replace the month with the zodiac sign and moved all the information like the Emperor's name, date, place of mint to the reverse. He issued gold coins with all twelve Zodiac signs.

This Leo coin was minted in 1618, the first year of issuance of the zodiac series. The obverse showcases a lion facing left, with the words "Sana 13 Julus". The reverse reads: "zar Ahmadabad ra dad zewar, Jahangir Shah Shahinshah Akbar"
