The Maratha zenith celebrated in a coin. In 1752, the Marathas made a deal with the Mughal emperor to protect the Empire in lieu of a hefty annual payment. When Ahmad Shah Durrani, the Afghan king, invaded India in 1757, the Marathas retaliated and chased away the Afghans beyond the Indus. For a short while, Punjab and its capital Lahore fell into Maratha hands. This is considered the apogee of Maratha rule in north India.
