Dr Guneeta Singh Bhalla is an experimental condensed matter physicist and the founder of the 1947 Partition Archive. At Sarmaya Talks, Guneeta spoke about what pushed her to start an archive of oral histories around the India-Pakistan Partition and shared some early insights into what she and her team have found from these moving eye-witness accounts.
Troubled with the realisation that an entire generation of eye-witnesses to the Partition of India was dying, Guneeta began a project in 2009 that would crowdsource oral histories and create public records of the largest mass migration in human history. So far, the Archive has recorded over 4,000 stories.
