Mercenaries, Merchants & Medicine-Men by Paul Abraham

Sarmaya Founder Paul Abraham’s talk traced the routes of some fascinating travellers to the Subcontinent between the 16th and 19th centuries. These men, who hailed from Western Asia, Scandinavia and everywhere in between, found untold riches, lasting fame and a spiritual home in India. Paul’s talk was illustrated by rare books, maps, coins and engravings that gave us a glimpse of the land as these travellers once saw it.

A banker with over three decades of experience, Paul Abraham is the founder of Sarmaya, the President of Hinduja Foundation and serves in advisory capacities and on the board of institutions such as Sanctuary Asia and DakshinaChitra Museum. His vision for Sarmaya is that it serve as a link between past and present so old wonders can be rediscovered through fresh eyes. Through his philanthropic work, he has supported young historians, artists and conservationists with fellowships, funding and sustained patronage.
